Reviving the Past: 24 Frames of Lightwell

Experiential Retail Space in a Renovated 50-Year-Old Building

24 Frames of Lightwell, a project by Jasmin Yi-Chu Shih, is an award-winning design that integrates commerce, fashion, art, and nature in a renovated 50-year-old building in Taipei. This unique project offers a fresh perspective on urban regeneration and development, providing a solution to walkup-apartment renovation with minimal environmental impacts.

The design is a rebirth of an old building, transforming it into an experiential retail store. The project stands out due to its unique approach to renovation. Instead of reconstructing the building, the design uses "24 frames" as a framework of the space, allowing various fields to integrate seamlessly. This approach not only preserves the urban fabric but also enhances the visitor's experience by influencing the interior environment and magnifying how they sense the surroundings.

The project uses a reinterpretation of existing materials to generate a newborn atmosphere while highlighting the texture of the old building. For instance, "modern terrazzo panels" are used in the select shop, while the existing "terrazzo staircase" is restored by oil-painting. This approach posed a significant challenge as the building was built in 1967, and many materials and techniques were lost over time.

The design covers an area of 353 m2 and was realized with the help of a team of experts, including a fashion consultant, a business consultant, a project manager, an architectural engineering designer, and an artist for the lightwell installation. The project started in April 2019 and was built in May 2020 in Taipei.

Through the "24 frames", playful interactions are created among the surroundings, visitors, and the artworks. This design not only offers a unique retail experience but also serves as a potential solution for renovating old walkup-apartments with minimal environmental impacts. The design has been recognized for its creativity and resourcefulness, winning the Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021.

In conclusion, 24 Frames of Lightwell is a testament to the power of design in transforming spaces and experiences. It is a perfect example of how design can breathe new life into old structures, creating a space that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly. The project is a beacon of innovative design, showing how old and new can coexist harmoniously, creating a unique and engaging retail experience.
